Do You Have It?

What is gum disease? How do I know if I have it? How did I get it and how do I get rid of it? How does this affect my health? All good questions!

The diagnosis and treatment of gum disease is one of the fastest changing areas in dentistry. As we come to understand what gum disease is, we have also come to understand that the mouth is not separate from the body and cannot be treated as such. There is much more to gum disease than brushing your teeth daily, flossing and seeing your dentist. If that was all we needed, we would not see the overwhelming number of people with gum disease we see today!

This is much more complex than that – it involves the whole body – diet, fitness, lifestyle, habits, heredity, health issues – the list goes on. The dental community is beginning to realize that while we focus on one area of the body, we are really dealing with the entire body and its ability to defend itself and heal itself.

Gum disease is one of the “quiet” diseases – like hypertension and diabetes – it is usually not painful and may go unnoticed for a long time until advanced symptoms appear. This is an infection and can progress to severe health issues.

Bleeding, red gums, bad breath, gaps that appear between teeth, moving teeth, teeth that appear longer than they used to, soreness, gum or tooth sensitivity that won’t go away – these are all possible signs of gum disease.

If gum disease is present, these symptoms will not go away and can progress to the point of tooth loss! Just as important, understand that infection does not stay in one place – this infection circulates throughout your body – big problem!

Treatment for gum disease takes place on several levels. First, dealing with any acute infection is primary. Laser therapy, ozone therapy, and home care counseling are first level treatments to help start the healing process. Identifying factors that put you at risk for infection and finding solutions is paramount to treating and preventing further disease and damage. Gum disease is not the result of “one germ”! It is the result of many factors coming together and any solution requires the combined effort of the patient and the dentist.

Dr. Scott detects and visualizes pathogenic microorganisms using the Biological Microscopic Periodontal-scan and determines the best treatment to eliminate gum disease.
