The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology was established in 1984 by a group of dentists, a physician, and an attorney who were concerned about the long-term health risks that were associated with the use of mercury-based, silver amalgam fillings.
At that time, many patients and medical practitioners were interested in alternatives to conventional fillings, understanding that mercury absorption, even in small amounts, could be avoided. What these leaders in oral health recognized, however, was that scientific findings needed to be provided to educate peers and patients alike.
Today, the IAOMT is a recognized and respected organization, with more than 700 North American members and chapters throughout the world. The organization focuses on interdisciplinary research and science-based fact, education, and advocacy while serving as a non-profit with 509(a)(2) Public Charity Status.
The research conducted by the IAOMT has demonstrated repeatedly that dental amalgam fillings represent a significant health risk from mercury exposure. Progressive dentists and surgeons, like H. Scott Stewart, Doctor of Dental Surgery, who are members of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology, promote the safe removal and disposal of silver amalgam fillings to protect the patient, staff, and environment.
More than a decade ago, Dr. Stewart, founder of South Lakewood Dental, author, and board-certified naturopathic physician (BCNP) adopted a biological and holistic approach to oral health care. In addition to following the protocol set forth by the IAOMT, which calls for specific steps, including enhanced ventilation, irrigation, and suction, when removing mercury fillings, Dr. Stewart also offers biocompatible materials for dental work. Our professional team uses mercury-and-metal-free composite fillings, which work with the patient’s own natural immune system. With our Biological Microscopic Periodontal scan, Dr. Stewart is able to detect, treat, and prevent harmful pathogens that can lead to the development of periodontal disease.
We understand that no two patients are exactly alike. That’s why we examine and treat each patient as a whole person. South Lakewood Dental provides a comprehensive range of biological, holistic, laser, restorative, general, cosmetic, and ozone dentistry for patients in the greater Denver area, Lakewood, Wheat Ridge, and surrounding Colorado neighborhoods.
