At South Lakewood Dental, our team encourages patients to think holistically. The smile is linked to the entire body, so a healthy mouth can translate to a healthy body. Studies show that periodontal disease, an infection of the mouth, can cause bacteria to enter the bloodstream and appear elsewhere in the body, causing a myriad of medical conditions including increased risks of heart disease, stroke, and even diabetes. When infection carries through the body, it can negatively impact it. This can all be avoided by taking proper care of the smile.
Many dentists focus on restorations including dental crowns. Dental crowns are ceramic restorations that are made to fit over prepared teeth. However, these non-flexible restorations may lead to decay, fractures, or even infection. To prepare a tooth for the placement of a dental crown, a dentist needs to remove almost all of the structure. There’s a better way to accomplish tooth restoration without putting the smile at risk, and this is with biomimetic restorations.
Biomimetic restorations maintain as much healthy structure as possible during preparation. Only the portion of the tooth that is damaged or fractured is replaced. Then, to rebuild the tooth, a special material is used to restore layer by layer so the tooth is more flexible. This ensures better protection from biting and chewing forces, which may otherwise break restorations such as crowns. To keep teeth restored for as long as possible, they must be repaired in a way that allows the tooth to function at its best. This means allowing it to expand, contract, and flex to daily use. This means using techniques such as biomimetics for optimum results.
Biomimetic restorations have been a focus of South Lakewood Dental for over a decade. It allows us to recommend alternatives to dental crowns and other repairs which may not be a suitable fit. Dr. Scott Stewart and his team encourage new patients to visit his holistic practice and discuss the advantages of using biomimetic restorations versus traditional means of repairing teeth.
