Cause of Chronic Migraine and pain relief treatment options

Patients who suffer from chronic headaches and migraines may find that their daily quality of life is constantly disrupted. There are many underlying reasons for these conditions, so an appointment with a primary care physician is the first step in determining what might be causing them. Additionally, with the help of a dentist, patients can find out if conditions such as TMJ disorder or bite misalignment are causing these issues. Dr. Scott Stewart, dentist at South Lakewood Dental, can evaluate patients with chronic headaches and migraines and determine if his treatment options can provide migraine pain relief.

What dental issues can cause chronic migraines?

Chronic migraines and headaches have many different causes, but if the source of the problem is the mouth, Dr. Scott Stewart can help! Certain dental conditions, such as temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD, can be responsible for chronic headaches. TMD is a dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint, also called the TMJ, which is the joint that connects the upper and lower jaw. When problematic, it can cause tension that results in:

  • Headaches and migraines
  • Aching pain in and around your ears
  • Shoulder and neck pain
  • Popping or locking of the jaw joint, making it difficult to open or close your mouth
  • Pain while chewing
  • Tenderness or pain in your jaw that radiates outward

Additionally, other interconnected issues such as bruxism can cause clenching and grinding of the jaw, resulting in discomfort. With a proper diagnosis by Dr. Stewart, patients can find the source of the issue and work to find relief!

What treatment options are available for chronic headaches and migraines?

Dr. Scott Stewart is excited to provide two primary methods for treating chronic pain from TMD and bruxism. The first is Trudenta/DTR treatments. These treatments allow patients to return to their lives pain-free without the use of medications or injections. Using a combination of services, including muscle manipulation, ultrasound therapy, microcurrent treatment, and cold laser therapy, followed by at-home care, patients can alleviate the pain and discomfort they experience from these dental conditions. Additionally, Dr. Stewart may use a special process called T-Scan to find the specific areas where the bite is misaligned and causing TMJ issues so as to resolve them and reduce the pain and symptoms associated with temporomandibular joint disorder.
