Dentist in Lakewood, CO describes the benefits of various sedation treatment options available
The staff at South Lakewood Dental are here to help patients achieve the smile of their dreams. However, they know that dental anxiety can stand in the way of getting necessary dental work done. Dr. Scott Stewart is a dentist in the community of Lakewood, Colorado who is pleased to describe to patients the benefits of working with a dental office that offers a variety of sedation treatment options.
What is sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry allows patients to undergo treatments without feeling anxious or nervous. This can be achieved in a variety of different ways. Sedation is different than anesthetics. Anesthetics is often achieved with an injection, allowing the dentist to make the area being treated numb and pain-free while he works on the smile. Sedation, on the other hand, does not deal directly with pain but more so with one’s emotional feeling when they visit the dental chair. It is not uncommon for patients to feel uneasy about having dental work done, which is why our team provides sedation.
Sedation methods available in our practice include the following:
- IV sedation – patients with severe anxieties, or patients who are faced with a long or invasive surgical procedure, may be best suited for IV sedation. Sedative medication is administered through a needle in the arm and is controlled and managed by our anesthesiologist on staff.
- Inhalation sedation – for patients with mild anxieties or patients with a strong gag reflex, nitrous oxide may be a more effective solution. It is an option that patients can use to provide more immediate relaxation that is controlled by our team. It is administered through the nose and allows patients to feel at ease and comfortable during even the simplest of procedures. To reverse, the dentist will administer oxygen and patients are able to drive themselves home, to school, or work right after their appointment. This is an affordable and reversible option for patients and is commonly referred to as “laughing gas.” It is actually nitrous oxide, which is colorless and odorless.
- AlphaStim – for some patients who are interested in a more holistic and non-pharmaceutical method of sedation are encouraged to learn about AlphaStim. This involves the use of a special medical device that does not utilize medication but can induce feelings of relaxation.
Which method of sedation is best for my needs?
Every patient is unique, and we know that there is not a “one size fits all” sedation method. This is why we are excited to provide a range for patients to choose based on the procedures they are having done, their overall health and wellness, and the level of anxiety that they experience when they visit the dentist. Whether you have mild anxiety or severe anxiety, we have a solution that will work for you!
We encourage patients to book a consultation appointment with Dr. Scott Stewart to discuss their dental needs, as well as their anxieties. We encourage patients to be open and honest about their anxieties so we can help them choose a sedation method most appropriate for their desires. We want patients to feel at ease with our team and open up to us about what they would desire from their visits to our practice.
