What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation methods available in our practice include the following:

• IV sedation – patients with severe anxieties, or patients who are faced with a long or invasive surgical procedure, may be best suited for IV sedation. Sedative medication is administered through a needle in the arm and is controlled and managed by our anesthesiologist on staff.
• Inhalation sedation – for patients with mild anxieties or patients with a strong gag reflex, nitrous oxide may be a more effective solution. It is an option that patients can use to provide more immediate relaxation that is controlled by our team. It is administered through the nose and allows patients to feel at ease and comfortable during even the simplest of procedures. To reverse, the dentist will administer oxygen and patients are able to drive themselves home, to school, or work right after their appointment. This is an affordable and reversible option for patients and is commonly referred to as “laughing gas.” It is actually nitrous oxide, which is colorless and odorless.
• AlphaStim – for some patients who are interested in a more holistic and non-pharmaceutical method of sedation are encouraged to learn about AlphaStim. This involves the use of a special medical device that does not utilize medication but can induce feelings of relaxation.
