The two stages of periodontal disease, also called gum disease, are gingivitis and periodontitis. Gum disease is a common condition, affecting an estimated 65 million Americans, or more than 45 percent. While gum disease is considered an oral health concern, it can have serious implications for overall physical health. Because gum disease is caused by infection and inflammation resulting from the bacteria found in plaque, it makes sense that this infection can wreak havoc on the rest of the immune system over time.
Patients with advanced cases of periodontal disease have a 40 percent greater likelihood of having an additional chronic health condition.
Inflammation in the body, including that which is present in gum disease, impairs a person’s ability to manage blood sugar. The link between gum disease and diabetes is reciprocal, in that uncontrolled blood sugar also puts a person at risk for infections, such as gum disease.
Research suggests that gum disease increases the risk for heart attack, heart disease and high blood pressure. Additionally, more than 90 percent of patients with heart disease also have periodontitis. The two conditions share several risk factors, including use of tobacco, being overweight, and eating unhealthy foods.
