No one wants to feel stress, fear, pain or anxiety. Yet some people avoid necessary dental care because it is associated with those uncomfortable emotions. A past painful experience or worry about loss of control or personal space may prevail over an individual’s desire for a healthy and happy smile.
Dr. Scott Stewart at South Lakewood Dental, serving patients from Wheat Ridge, Lakewood, and nearby communities in Colorado, believes that every patient should be able to receive the attentive and personalized dental care that they require and deserve, in a relaxing and comfortable environment.
Sedation dentistry has grown in popularity as more options have become available to put patients at ease. We offer several sedation services based upon the patient’s needs and the procedure being performed.
To prevent discomfort at the site of dental work, a local anesthesia gently numbs the area so that the patients do not feel the activity. Local anesthesia controls pain but does not address anxiety.
Prescription sedatives, oral or IV, can be provided in doses appropriate to the procedure and patient needs. Sedation puts the patient at ease, relieving anxiety and reducing worry and self-consciousness, and often diminishing a patient’s recall of the procedure. While the patient may have been conscious throughout, the lack of fear and the relaxed state make the procedure less traumatic or memorable.
Nitrous oxide, commonly referred to as laughing gas, happy gas, or sweet air, is an odorless, colorless gas, with little to no risk of irritation. Nitrous oxide induces a feeling of happiness. Patients may feel temporarily lightheaded. Nitrous oxide is fast acting and the effects last only as long as the gas is being delivered. The effects disappear within about 5 minutes after discontinuation. The level of sedation is easily adjusted and monitored.
AlphaStim is a non-invasive medical device that provides stimulation that reduces anxiety, pain and fear. This technology has been used by the US military for the past decade. The device emits a unique waveform that allows cells in the body to return to their natural state. Gentle clips applied to the earlobes apply current that induces a relaxed, pleasant sense of well-being.
